Traffic around one of Southeast Portland's most notoriously tight rail crossings ground to a halt Friday morning after a crash involving a train near SE 12th Avenue and SE Clinton Street. The incident was reported around 11:20 a.m., and both police and fire crews responded to the scene.
According to KATU, emergency crews were still working the scene late in the morning and only limited information had been released. KATU noted it first posted about the crash at 11:31 a.m., then quickly updated the developing report as new details trickled in, with more updates promised as officials speak out.
Where it happened
The SE 12th and Clinton rail crossing sits where freight and passenger tracks slice through a dense run of inner-Southeast neighborhoods, popular bike routes and small local businesses. Chronic train blockages and delays at this stretch have been a neighborhood headache for years, and safety worries are not theoretical, as BikePortland has reported.
In November 2025, that outlet reported that an e-scooter rider was killed after colliding with an Amtrak train at a nearby crossing, a deadly reminder of the risks that come with the corridor's at-grade crossings.
Transit and past incidents
Crashes and blockages near Clinton and 12th have a way of rippling across the transit network. TriMet issued a bulletin in June 2025 after a collision near Clinton and SE 12th that delayed Orange and Yellow MAX line service.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation has also tagged SE 12th and Clinton as one of the locations that received "Wait for Green" markings for people on bikes, part of an ongoing effort to clarify how riders should move through signalized crossings and reduce close calls, according to PBOT. Taken together, those previous disruptions and safety upgrades help explain why a crash at these tracks draws such a sizable emergency response.
What officials say
As of mid-day, neither the Portland Police Bureau nor Portland Fire & Rescue had posted formal statements detailing whether anyone was injured, what caused the crash or which rail company might be involved. KATU reported that only limited details were available while crews continued working at the scene.
This story will be updated as local agencies or rail operators release more information. In the meantime, travelers should expect delays around SE 12th Avenue and SE Clinton Street and follow directions from emergency personnel until authorities clear and reopen the area.
