Two men were captured by police during an attempted heist at a high-end Orange County handbag store, with authorities retrieving an estimated $100,000 worth of luxury goods. The Irvine Police Department responded to an alert from building security about a burglary in progress "in the area of Jamboree and Dupont," as detailed in an Instagram post. The suspects, later identified as 40-year-old Richard Bernard Spencer of Los Angeles and 30-year-old Marcellus Ronell Shelby of Hollywood, were reportedly seen on surveillance footage entering the building by scaling a wall.
According to a report by KTLA, the thieves, clad in black hoodies, face masks, and sunglasses, appeared to quickly try to exit the premises upon realizing that officers were closing in. Their escape route, however, turned to quickly close a door they were about to exit through, and in turn, they made their way up a staircase in a desperate bid to evade arrest.
The incident, which occurred during the early morning hours, resulted in a swift police response. Surveillance cameras played an instrumental role in tracking the suspects' movements inside the store. Body-worn camera footage provided by the Irvine Police Department captured the tense moments officers, including a K9 unit, with guns drawn, located and detained both suspects. One was seen on video surrendering to police; another was found in an office area filled with cubicles.
Both Spencer and Shelby were arrested without further incident and faced charges of "burglary, grand theft, conspiracy, vandalism and resisting arrest," according to the Irvine Police Department's Instagram post. The stolen handbags, representing significant value to the victim, were successfully recovered and returned.
The Irvine Police Department collaborated with the Costa Mesa Police Department, which provided drone support during the operation. The successful apprehension of the suspects underscores the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration and advanced surveillance technology. While the incident highlights an ongoing issue with high-end retail theft, it also showcases effective law enforcement responses to such acts.
