Queens, NY became the backdrop for a car theft that was as bizarre as it was alarming this past Saturday evening. A 34-year-old man left his 2016 Subaru idling with his 72-year-old father, who is partially blind, in the backseat as he went into a store. The incident took place near 44th Drive and 23rd Street in Hunters Point, PIX11 reported.
During the son's absence, an unidentified suspect saw an opportunity in the idling vehicle and made an impulsive move. He entered the car and drove off, with the elder man still inside, the NYPD detailed in a statement obtained by ABC7NY. It was not until later that police were able to locate the car, abandoned, near 53rd Avenue and 44th Street, in the heart of Long Island City. Officers arriving on the scene found the elderly passenger unharmed but the suspect had already fled.
The NYPD's ongoing investigation is focused on piecing together the events that prompted this audacious theft. Meanwhile, they have made a public appeal, encouraging anyone with information to come forward, in hopes of identifying the suspect behind this incident.
For those with knowledge of the carjacking, NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) is open, providing a confidential outlet to share valuable insights that might aid in the suspect's apprehension.
