
In Louisiana, authorities are investigating the killing of a bald eagle after it was found shot in Vermilion Parish. The incident occurred on December 5, 2025, when Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) agents discovered the injured bird near the intersection of Robert Road and Wilmer Road in Erath. Despite efforts to treat it, the bald eagle died from its gunshot wounds shortly after being found.
Authorities are offering a substantial reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), the total reward is up to $6,000. Contributions include $2,500 each from Humane World for Animals and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), with Louisiana Operation Game Thief offering up to $1,000 for tips that result in a conviction.
Anyone with information about this wildlife crime is encouraged to come forward. As per the LDWF, tips can be submitted by calling the Louisiana Operation Game Thief hotline at 1-800-442-2511 or through the LDWF’s tip411 program, which allows anonymous submissions by texting “LADWF” and the relevant information to 847411. Additionally, the “LADWF Tips” app is available for both iPhone and Android devices. These reporting channels are monitored 24 hours a day to allow for prompt follow-up on any leads.
Illegal actions against bald eagles are serious federal offenses under the Bald Eagle Protection Act. Those convicted can face fines of up to $5,000, up to one year in prison, and an additional civil restitution fine of up to $5,000. Authorities treat these cases with high priority, working to hold offenders accountable while continuing to protect and preserve America’s wildlife.
