In a significant move to bolster emergency medical services in Pittsburgh, UPMC has stepped in with a $10 million donation earmarked for updating the city's fleet of ambulances and rescue trucks. Mayor Corey O'Connor made the announcement, highlighting that this financial boost will enable the procurement of nine ambulances and a rescue truck this year, followed by a parallel investment in 2027. "This contribution reflects who we are at UPMC – a mission-driven institution committed to Pittsburgh’s well-being," Leslie Davis, president and CEO of UPMC, said in a statement obtained by WPXI.
After the city grappled with the aftermath of a record-setting snowfall, the significant influx of funds from UPMC comes at a critical time. Being down to about 50 trucks for clean-up efforts, the city was in a dire situation when dozens of vehicles were put out of commission by the storm. The donation also frees up the city to reallocate funds previously set aside for EMS vehicles, directing them towards the acquisition of 35 Department of Public Works vehicles, addressing both immediate and future needs.
Adding to the discourse, Pittsburgh's City Controller Rachael Heisler remarked on the donation's impact on the city's infrastructure: "This is a significant investment in our fleet at a critical time," she stated, as reported by WPXI. This sentiment connects to Pittsburgh's storied history with EMS, as the city is known as the birthplace of Emergency Medical Services.
With the fresh funding secured, EMS Chief Amera Gilchrist expressed gratitude, claiming the UPMC gift as an "incredible" addition, displaying the shared commitment to providing excellent medical care to the community. "UPMC is proud to step forward and support the City's EMS system, which plays a vital role in caring for patients," Davis said in a news release echoed by CBS News Pittsburgh. With the newfound resources, the city is now positioned to enhance its response capabilities in emergencies, aligning with the overall mission to safeguard community health.
