What started as a routine traffic stop in Vista ended with deputies hauling away more than 60 pounds of methamphetamine and shutting down a local barbershop for a search, authorities said.
Deputies pulled over a BMW sedan on Wednesday and reported finding roughly 40 pounds of meth inside the car. That discovery led detectives to Urban Cuts Barbershop, where a search warrant turned up even more drugs. A 25-year-old man was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
How deputies say they traced the load
According to a news release from San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials, deputies with the Vista Patrol Station conducted the traffic stop on Wednesday and discovered about 40 pounds of methamphetamine inside the BMW.
The release says detectives then obtained a search warrant for Urban Cuts Barbershop at 995 Postal Way. Inside, they reported recovering roughly 20 additional pounds of meth along with about 2.5 pounds of cocaine, turning a single traffic stop into a sizable narcotics seizure.
Arrest and booking
FOX 5 San Diego reported that the man arrested in connection with the case was identified as 25-year-old Jaaziel Sandoval. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of possession for sale of a controlled substance.
FOX 5 also published photos credited to the sheriff's department that show packaged narcotics and other evidence from the seizure. Authorities have not said whether they expect to make additional arrests as the investigation moves forward.
What detectives found at the barbershop
Investigators identified Urban Cuts at 995 Postal Way as the business where the additional narcotics were seized. Between the traffic stop and the barbershop search, officials said the total amount of methamphetamine taken into evidence topped 60 pounds.
The sheriff's office said a media contact at the Vista Patrol Station was listed in the release and urged residents to report suspicious activity to the department, underscoring that community tips can help crack open cases like this one.
Broader enforcement context
Large, multi-pound meth seizures are a familiar sight in the Southern California border region, where local and federal agencies regularly intercept suspected drug loads on streets and at ports of entry.
For example, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported in September that agents found 52 pounds of meth hidden inside a spare tire during a smuggling attempt. Cases like that and the Vista barbershop bust highlight how a simple traffic stop or border check can suddenly turn into a major drug case, law enforcement officials say.
Legal note
The sheriff's release said the arrested individual was held on suspicion of possession for sale of a controlled substance. As with any case, he is presumed innocent unless and until charges are filed and proven in court.
Investigators have not yet released details about how the drugs were packaged or what kind of distribution network might be tied to the seizure. Officials say the case remains under active investigation.
