Walton County has finally unveiled "The Grove" Park, a massive $42 million recreation and entertainment hub that has joined the community's list of attractions. In the spirit of the holidays, local officials and residents came together last Monday, December 22 for the park's grand opening, highlighted by a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony which saw Walton County Board of Commissioners Chairman David Thompson, Walnut Grove Mayor Stephanie Moncrief, and Walton County Parks and Recreation Director Jody Johnson taking the ceremonial scissors to the ribbon, as reported by Walton County News.
Sprawled over 124 acres, The Grove's first phase debuts a plethora of amenities including a 5,000-person amphitheater, a premier softball complex with five synthetic-turf fields, a large community center for all sorts of indoor activities, a spacious and secure playground for the little ones, and miles of scenic walking trails for those looking to enjoy tranquility. Chairman Thompson enthused about the park at the opening, stating, "This park is a testament to what we can achieve when we invest in our future," and he emphasized its significance for the county's children, as noted by Walton County News.
At the center of The Grove is a state-of-the-art amphitheater designed to host major concerts, festivals, and community theater. A modern hub with concession stands, restrooms, and shaded seating anchors the park’s premier softball complex. Nearby, a new community center offers activity rooms, meeting spaces, offices, and classrooms, serving as the focal point for the park’s indoor recreation and community programs.
Mayor Stephanie Moncrief praised the county's efforts, saying "The county did an amazing job. It is a beautiful addition to our home," she also expressed her pride for the city of Walnut Grove being fortunate to house such a facility, her comments captured by Walton County News. Funding for The Grove came without adding debt obligation to the property owners, thanks to the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds which were utilized, demonstrating a community's commitment to shared financial responsibility for its amenities.
