San Antonio police are searching for a hit-and-run driver after a woman was found dead Saturday along the Interstate 35 service road near Fischer Road on the city's Southwest Side, turning a routine workday for a nearby employee into a grim discovery.
Investigators said an employee at a nearby business spotted what he believed was a body on the service road and called 911. Officers arrived and pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Police reported vehicle parts scattered nearby and are treating the case as a suspected hit-and-run.
How Officers Were Alerted
According to KSAT, the call came in from someone at a nearby business who reported a person who appeared to be injured on the I-35 service road. By the time officers reached the scene, the victim had already died. Investigators told the station they found vehicle debris in the area and that no suspect has been identified. Detectives have described the case as an active investigation.
Pedestrian Safety On State Roads
The stretch of pavement where the woman was found sits on a TxDOT-managed corridor, part of the network of state highways that fall outside some of the city's own road safety programs. As reported by the San Antonio Report, roughly 60% of pedestrian crashes in the city occur on state highways such as I-35, and San Antonio recorded 917 crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists in 2024. City transportation officials have pointed to limited lighting, higher speeds and gaps in infrastructure along these major corridors as contributing factors.
Investigation And How To Help
SAPD said it is treating the death as a hit-and-run and has not made any arrests, according to KSAT. The City of San Antonio lists Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (210-224-7867) and provides a text tip option to CRIMES (274637) for anonymous information. Officials urged anyone who noticed a vehicle with fresh damage near the I-35 service road and Fischer Road on Saturday to contact investigators through those channels.
The investigation remains active, and authorities said they will release more details as they become available.
