A tragic hit-and-run accident left a woman dead in Brooklyn's Brownsville neighborhood earlier today, as reported by the NYPD. The incident, which is now under an active police investigation, occurred on Pitkin Avenue near Mother Gaston Boulevard around 6:50 a.m. when a gray vehicle, heading west, struck the victim, as per details shared by Gothamist. The identity of the deceased woman has not been released, and authorities have yet to make any arrests relating to the case.
Officers responding to a 911 call found the victim with severe trauma to her head, and body; and she was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical workers. This incident marks the first fatal crash for the year within the jurisdiction of the 73rd Precinct, which includes both Brownsville and Ocean Hill. Last year, New York City reported a decrease in traffic deaths, with a record-low of 205 fatalities across the five boroughs — representing a 19% drop compared to 2024.
Further grim details emerged via a surveillance video obtained by ABC7 NY, showing that the woman was dragged under the car for two blocks before her body fell onto the street outside a laundromat. The vehicle involved did not stop after the incident, as seen in the footage driving down Pitkin Avenue.
The NYPD continues to search for the driver, and urges anyone with information to come forward.
