A 21-year-old woman from New Jersey died last week in a hiking accident on Mount Marcy, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. FOX 5 that the hiker called for help at 3:05 p.m. last Thursday after slipping and becoming unable to return to the trail, with her dog present at the scene.
Search efforts were hampered by dense cloud cover, which prevented a State Police helicopter from locating the hiker near the summit. According to NJ.com, responders used snowmobiles and a tracked utility vehicle, but high winds limited aerial operations, so the search proceeded on the ground. One ranger was lowered to the Marcy Dam Outpost to begin the ground search.
Officials confirmed that the woman’s body was found at approximately 9:51 p.m. Recovery was delayed until the following morning due to adverse weather conditions, which initially prevented crews from retrieving her remains. The incident occurred in the High Peaks Wilderness Area of Adirondack Park, near the 5,341-foot summit of Mount Marcy.
Authorities have not released the identity of the hiker but confirmed that her dog was safely recovered. A NYDEC spokesperson, speaking to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, offered condolences to the victim’s family. Officials noted the incident highlights the risks of hiking in challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions.
