The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department is once again gearing up to host its annual Flight of the Fireflies Lantern Parade. Slated for Saturday, March 7 at Dudley Park, the event aims to bring the community together to illuminate the night with a melange of lights and colors. As reported by the Athens-Clarke County government website, locals are encouraged to congregate starting from 6:00 p.m., with the procession to officially commence just after 7:00 p.m.
The parade is a celebratory event, welcoming families, individuals, and various groups to walk the park's meandering trails adorned with lanterns and light. It invites participants to not only just simply join but to actively become part of the spectacle by bringing their own handheld light sources. These can range from DIY lanterns to flameless devices, providing a safe experience for all attendees. This year's gathering marks the third occurrence of what has become a cherished community tradition, recognized for its distinctiveness and charged with the spirit of collective creativity.
During the evening, parade-goers will be privy to more than the glow of their lanterns. Live music, performances, and a display of large-scale illuminated sculptures are poised to heighten the festivity at the heart of Dudley Park. The Athens-Clarke County government announcement specifies that each entry point to the park will be color-coded and fully staffed with volunteers, thereby making sure that visitors can swiftly find their respective paths.
The previous year's Flight of the Fireflies Lantern Parade not only left an indelible mark on the community but also on the broader state, having been honored with the Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s Programming Network Outstanding Special Event Award.
