What started as a reported plan for a fight in a back hallway at Edmond Santa Fe High School on Wednesday ended with two students detained and a loaded handgun pulled from a backpack, according to school officials. No students or staff were injured, and administrators said the situation was contained quickly. Law enforcement removed the juveniles from campus and opened an investigation.
In an email to families, Principal Jason Hayes said staff and school resource officers moved fast once they were alerted to the planned altercation. He wrote, "I want to assure you that all students and staff members are safe and I want to thank those involved for their quick response," as reported by KOCO. Hayes added that the students involved will be disciplined under district policy. According to school staff, the gun was discovered after officers detained students who had gathered with the intent to fight.
The Edmond Police Department told News 9 that two 17-year-old juveniles were arrested following the incident. Police said one of the teens faces complaints of felony possession of a firearm on school grounds and felony assault and battery on a police officer, while the other faces a complaint of felony assault and battery on a police officer. Authorities said the investigation is still active.
School Response and Safety Measures
School resource officers and staff quickly separated the students and secured the area once the situation unfolded, and officials said the district will follow board policy regarding weapons on campus, according to KOCO. In communication with families, the district also urged parents and guardians to remind students how serious it is to bring any kind of weapon to school. Administrators confirmed that Edmond Santa Fe does not use metal detectors as a routine security measure.
Legal Implications
The arrests are being handled by law enforcement and will move through the juvenile justice system, according to the police statement reported by News 9. School leaders said that disciplinary action under district policy will proceed separately from the criminal process. Officials have not released the names of the arrested students because they are minors.
This is the latest safety scare at the campus. Earlier this month, a hoax 911 call about a gun in a bathroom prompted a brief lockdown, as reported in a bathroom gun hoax report. District officials urged families to rely on official school communications for verified updates and said parents with immediate questions should contact Edmond Public Schools or local law enforcement.
