What started as a domestic disturbance call in Bradenton’s Braden Castle Park neighborhood turned into an hours-long standoff Sunday night, ending early Monday when the man inside finally agreed to walk out and surrender to police. Officers brought in negotiators and SWAT, but in the end, the suspect gave up without further violence, and officials reported no additional injuries.
Bradenton Police identified the suspect as Christopher Liebeck. Investigators say the ordeal began after his 87-year-old stepfather left the home and went to a neighbor’s house, then called 911 to report that Liebeck had physically attacked him, threatened to hurt others, taken his phone and had multiple firearms. Those details were shared in the department’s post on X. Officers obtained arrest warrants after the victim agreed to stay with a neighbor, but Liebeck initially refused to come out, triggering the full tactical response.
How police resolved the standoff
According to the Bradenton Police Department, the Hostage Negotiation Team made contact with Liebeck while drones kept watch on the residence and SWAT staged nearby. After several rounds of conversation with negotiators, Liebeck agreed to surrender and was taken into custody without incident. The department said the Manatee County Sheriff's Office K9 and SWAT Teams also assisted at the scene.
Charges and legal context
Police say Liebeck is charged with aggravated assault, battery on a person 65 or older, and deprivation of 911. Under Florida law, preventing or hindering someone from reaching law enforcement can fall under witness-tampering and related offenses. For the statutory language and potential penalties, see Florida Statute 914.22. Prosecutors will determine formal charges as the case moves forward.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bradenton Police through the department’s non-emergency line or tip line, and officials say additional details could be released as the case proceeds.
