Durham police swarmed a silver sedan with a shattered rear windshield on Tuesday afternoon after the car turned up in a business lot near the intersection of S. Miami Boulevard and T.W. Alexander Drive, its back window punched through with multiple bullet holes.
Officers quickly ringed off the scene, snapping photos and combing around the vehicle while investigators tried to piece together what happened. So far, authorities have not said whether anyone was hurt or if anyone is in custody in connection with the gunfire.
Sky 5 aerial video showed officers clustered around the damaged sedan and its blown-out rear glass, according to WRAL. WRAL reports the car was parked in the lot of a Durham business off S. Miami Boulevard and T.W. Alexander Drive and that reporters were still pressing police for more details.
Violence Along a Troubled Stretch
The S. Miami Boulevard corridor has seen more than its share of gunfire in recent years. In late December, a fatal shopping-center shooting was reported in the same general area. That pattern has left workers and shoppers on edge and pushed local leaders and law enforcement to promise extra attention for violence hot spots across the city.
Police Tight-Lipped as Probe Begins
Durham police have not released information about who owns the vehicle or how long it may have been sitting in the lot. WRAL reports officials were still working to determine whether anyone was injured or if any arrests had been made.
As with most shooting investigations, detectives are expected to review nearby surveillance cameras and talk with employees, customers and other potential witnesses at surrounding businesses as they try to fill in the blanks.
