A shooting at a Durham shopping center last Saturday night left a man dead. Durham police responded to reports of gunfire on North Miami Boulevard around 8:30 p.m., finding the man with serious gunshot injuries. He later died at a local hospital. A person of interest has been taken in for questioning, though their connection to the incident is still under investigation, according to WRAL.

This incident adds to a series of violent events at the shopping center over recent years, including a New Year’s Day shooting in 2023 that injured five people, a fatal drive-by shooting at a nearby bus stop in July 2023, and additional shootings in April 2024 and October this year. B.J. Bradsher, commenting on safety concerns while working in the area, told WRAL, “I think it's unfortunate that you can't walk across the parking lot and feel safe, or be at work and be safe.”

Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams has pledged to address the recurring pattern of crime, emphasizing the need to use data proactively to prevent incidents. “We are having the same repetitive crimes happning in the same areas of our city. That is data we need to act on and not just observe,” Mayor Williams said in a WRAL interview. He also encouraged community involvement in developing solutions.
