Cary's residents witnessed a mix of achievement and continued challenges as the aftermath of Winter Storm Gianna lingered on the town's roads and services. The cooperative efforts of the town's A+Team and some help from clear skies led to the successful plowing of primary and secondary roads, as well as progress in residential areas, according to a report by the Town of Cary. However, the road to full recovery remained marked with icy patches and potential hazards.
Emergency Operations Center Manager and Fire Chief Mike Cooper highlighted the communal efforts, stating, "We had the trifecta of support working in our favor today, and we needed every bit of help to make real progress." In a conscious move to support both recovery and staff well-being, Cary's Snow Command decided to strategically reduce their staffing to focus on problematic areas. The Emergency Operations Center shifted to a limited virtual stance but will stay operational with key staff.
Important updates for local residents include delays in curbside collection and the closure of Cary Town Hall and all other staffed facilities on Monday, which was corroborated by the Town of Cary's news release. Remote work is encouraged where possible for Cary employees, while advisory boards meetings will transition to virtual platforms.
Although Cary 311 phone lines were closed for the day, communication remains open via email, text, web portal, and social media. Public transportation, such as GoCary Fixed Route and Door to Door services, are set to resume operations from noon yesterday. Cary's residents are urged to remain vigilant for the signs of frostbite and hypothermia and are advised to be prepared for further adverse conditions by taking measures to protect their homes and communities.
As the town continues to battle the effects of the storm, the local community is being reminded of the importance of checking on neighbors, avoiding the streets to allow town equipment to service the areas, and staying informed by signing up for ReadyWake Alerts. For emergency power outage reporting, Duke Energy Progress and Apex Electric are the contacts. And in case anyone missed it, real-time updates on road conditions can be sourced from Cary's live traffic cameras and traffic map.
