Richard Ferguson, a 68-year-old Central Florida father, was sentenced to 37 years in prison after a fatal car crash in September 2023 involving his teenage son. ClickOrlando reported that the crash resulted in the deaths of a grandmother and her three grandchildren. Despite Ferguson's claims of innocence regarding his role in giving his son access to the car, the jury found him guilty on four counts of manslaughter.
During the trial, it came to light that Ferguson's son, Ri’shard, who was 15 and unlicensed at the time of the incident, was behind the wheel when the car crashed into another vehicle at high speed. According to WESH, the impact killed a 50-year-old woman and her three grandchildren, ages 1, 9, and 11, respectively. The father, who has been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer, will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars due to the lengthy sentence.
Defense arguments at the sentencing hearing highlighted Ferguson's health issues, expressing concern that his medical needs could not be met in prison, a point emphasized by the defendant’s niece, who said, without proper care and treatment, he won’t make it behind a jail cell. His daughter argued his role as a loving and caring father, highlighting a deep contradiction between his character and the irrevocable damage caused by the crash.
Ferguson himself took the stand, offering an apology to the victims' families. "I am profoundly sorry. This tragedy did not just take lives, it shattered families," he said, according to WESH. Despite the emotional testimonies and apologies, Ferguson's actions leading to the crash have resulted in a decision that leaves little room for future redemption outside the confines of a prison cell.
The defendant's son previously accepted a plea agreement, and under the terms of the deal, he will remain in juvenile custody until he is 19 and under supervision until 21. Ferguson has the option to appeal the sentence within 30 days, a process that remains his only recourse following what has been a catastrophic event for all parties involved.
