Charlotte's weather is showing its fickle character once again with forecasters from the National Weather Service predicting a blend of rain and snowfall today and into the twilight hours. According to a weather update posted early this morning, the city should brace for rain, likely to start after 4 pm, with chilly temperatures hovering near 46 degrees. Patchy fog is also on the menu between noon and 4 pm, contributing to subdued visibility across the region.
As the evening progresses, uncertainty shrouds exactly how the night will unfold. The rain could give way to snow between 1 am and 4 am, with a slim chance that Charlotteans may wake up to a light dusting. Conditions are set to improve marginally as we move into Thursday, offering no respite from the cloud coverage but promising a peek of sunshine later in the day. Temperatures are expected to crawl to a high of 42 degrees with somewhat less biting, north northeast winds of 5 to 9 mph.
In terms of potential hazards, the outlook remains inconspicuous for now. "Light rain moves back into the area this afternoon into tonight. As colder air filters tonight, the rain may mix with or change to snow before ending," the National Weather Service advises. While snow accumulations are projected to be way on the light side, less than half an inch, those traversing the streets may face off against very light icing, primarily restricted to elevated surfaces. If the situation appreciates to the point of needing it, a Winter Weather Advisory may be declared.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Charlotte can anticipate a respite from the cold as a warming trend is expected to kick in, leading to a run of sunny days with temperatures steadily rising from the low 50s on Friday and Saturday to the more accommodating high 50s come Tuesday. And though the weather may vacillate as often as the hands on a clock, one thing remains certain – the good people of Charlotte will, as ever, adjust, adapt, and find a way to press forth, ever resilient in the wake of nature's whims.
