In a heartfelt reunion that took place in Charlotte over the Valentine's Day weekend, a local firefighter met with a man whose life he had helped to save. Captain Travis Phillips of the Charlotte Fire Department connected with Kurt Rosalik, a father and husband who suffered cardiac arrest in late December 2024.
Rosalik had collapsed in his home, and his wife, Polyana, eight and a half months pregnant at the time, attempted CPR while awaiting emergency services. Charlotte Fire's fast response and effective CPR were pivotal in Rosalik's survival. According to a report by CharlotteNC.gov, Engine 8, led by Captain Anthony Perez was first on the scene, taking swift action to manage the critical situation.
The meeting, laden with emotion, illustrated the impact of the department's emphasis on teamwork, training, and rapid response. “It’s awesome when you get the other half of the story,” Captain Phillips told CharlotteNC.gov. The department's consistent approach to CPR has shown commendable results on a national scale, showcasing a well-orchestrated system with each firefighter understanding their role during an emergency.
Battalion Chief Rob Fitzgerald highlighted the importance of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in cardiac arrest responses. In March 2025, Kurt and Polyana expressed their gratitude to Firehouse 8's crew, which Captain Perez was a part of, during the captain's shift. This recent reunion was part of the Cardiac Survivors Event, which was a testament to the department's dedication and discipline. “When you get to see somebody that you know you directly impacted their life and their family, that’s special,” Phillips said.
