Clearwater Main Library is tapping into the creativity of Bay Area residents by offering a unique program that marries the tactile joy of manual artisanship with communal learning. Librarian Thomas Shepherd is at the helm of this initiative, diligently guiding library-goers through the intimate processes of woodworking in what's known as the Creation Studio.

As reported by the city's official news, Shepherd leads a series of hands-on classes designed for adults seeking to hone or enhance their woodworking skills. The monthly "Woodworking Projects" program caters to varying levels of experience and is structured around three classes per project. Limited to a cozy group of seven per session, these gatherings are as much about crafting objects as they are about creating community.

Speaking to the heart behind the hammer and chisel, Shepherd shared with the city's news outlet, "In each class, we focus on a specific hand tool or process. A really fun element of this is discussing history, trivia and lore around a technique or tool as we work."

Since its inception in the Fall of 2024, the woodworking program has expanded, now offering additional lab time for eager makers. During these sessions, workshop enthusiasts can use the library's tools to progress on projects initiated in the monthly classes or start entirely new ones using their own materials.

However, Shepherd's sphere of influence doesn't stop with wood. The Clearwater Public Library System has embraced the maker movement wholeheartedly, providing resources like 3D printing and an open art studio, ensuring patrons have access to a full spectrum of creative opportunities. Twice a week, the library's fourth floor turns into an artist's haven where community members can access materials and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow creators.

The essence of these initiatives is captured in Shepherd's own words. "My favorite part is when a beginner or someone who thought they couldn't work wood realizes that they can develop the skills needed to complete the project and that they have a creative and original voice as a maker," he told the city's news platform. These words echo an invitation to all, from novices to seasoned crafters, to take part in a practical journey of creative exploration at the library. Shepherd sums up the open invite, "If you always wanted to try working with wood and/or reconnect with skills like this or are simply curious about making, Woodworking at the Clearwater Public Library is a great place to start!"
