Hernando County is gearing up for another cold snap, and this time county emergency officials are again turning the Brooksville Enrichment Center into an overnight warming site to help people ride out the chill.
Hernando County Emergency Management says the temporary center will open Sunday night at the Brooksville Enrichment Center, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd. in Brooksville, offering a warm, safe place during the coldest overnight hours.
According to a Facebook post shared by the Hernando County Sheriff's Office along with county emergency notices, the warming center will operate on an overnight schedule of 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. while the cold conditions persist. Officials are urging residents to spread the word to anyone who might be stuck without safe heat.
How the warming center will operate
This is a short-term overnight refuge, not a full-service shelter. Local reporting notes that it typically does not provide meals, cots or accept pets, so it is meant as a basic, warm place to get through the night rather than a long-term option.
Transportation is being coordinated by Hernando County Transit (TheBus), which has arranged evening pickups at the Walmart on U.S. 41 (7305 Broad St.) around 8 p.m., with riders returned the following morning, according to WUSF.
Who should go and what to bring
County officials are urging anyone without safe heating at home, including seniors and people with medical needs, to consider heading to the warming center while temperatures drop. Pets are not allowed, and the site will not provide cots or meals, so residents are advised to bring blankets, warm clothing and any necessary medications.
For help getting to the site, call Hernando County Transit (TheBus) at (352) 754-4444.
Past activations and local context
Hernando County has opened similar warming centers in recent weeks as freeze warnings have moved through the Tampa Bay region, a pattern local officials link to short bursts of Arctic air that can be hard on pipes, plants and people. Local outlets including the Hernando Sun and Prism News have been tracking those previous activations and sharing county guidance.
If you or someone you know needs a ride or more information, call TheBus at (352) 754-4444 or Hernando County government at (352) 754-4000. County officials say they will continue posting updates on their social channels, and the Sheriff's Office Facebook post linked above includes the initial notice on the latest activation.
