Last Monday, the unsettling discovery on Empire Church Road prompted immediate action by county officials to secure the area, ensuring that no motorist takes an unintended subterranean detour. The subsequent report from the firm, Tierra, Inc., highlighted an inconvenient truth: the ground beneath Central Florida's feet is not as steadfast as it seems, thanks to a limestone geology prone to creating subterranean voids over time. An engineering firm conducted the evaluation and confirmed the cause of the settlement, WESH reports.
Leslie Campione, the chairman of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, empathized with the community, acknowledging the disruption and frustration that such a ground collapse brings. She assured the community, stating, "Our priority from day one has been safety. Now that we have confirmation of the cause, we are focused on moving forward with a permanent repair solution as quickly and responsibly as possible," according to the same WESH article.
