Nassau County police swept into Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream on Thursday afternoon to shut down a planned "takeover," breaking up large groups and hauling several people into custody as shoppers and bystanders cleared out.
Cellphone and citizen videos shared online show crowds dispersing and police vehicles flooding the property after flyers circulated on social media, calling for a 3 p.m. "takeover," according to News 12. The outlet reports officers had a heavy and very visible presence across the mall grounds as people left the scene.
County Executive Bruce Blakeman, in a statement quoted by News 12, said the "mischief planned for Green Acres Mall was completely shut down." Police told the station seven people were arrested in connection with the disturbance, though authorities have not released their ages or the specific charges.
Police Response And Earlier Incidents
The latest scare lands at a mall that already has a tense recent history. In 2022, a shooting inside a Famous Footwear store triggered a lockdown and a sweeping police search, spotlighting long-simmering safety concerns at the complex, as reported by ABC7. That incident, along with prior shoplifting-related arrests, has kept Green Acres at the center of local debates about crime and security.
Mall On Edge As Redevelopment Continues
All of this is unfolding while Green Acres undergoes a major overhaul. The ongoing redevelopment is pitched as a transformation that will bring in new restaurants, a supermarket, and an expanded dining district, with officials saying the changes come with a renewed emphasis on security. Project materials on the mall’s redevelopment site describe outward-facing shops and new public spaces as part of a broader reimagining of the property. Green Acres Reimagined
What Officials Say
Authorities have not released additional details about the arrests and have asked anyone with video or information to contact investigators, according to local reporting. County officials have publicly praised the police response and say investigators plan to comb through footage and social media posts to determine whether more people could face consequences.
