A routine evening on Tacoma’s waterfront turned tense on Tuesday when rescue divers pulled a man from the Thea Foss Waterway near Dock Street, as bystanders lined the esplanade and filmed the unfolding drama.
Pierce County and Tacoma emergency crews began CPR on the shoreline before loading the man into an ambulance and taking him to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately known. Part of the waterfront was temporarily closed as first responders worked the scene and the crowd gathered.
Rescue teams recover man from water
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office rescue dive team located and pulled a man from the water near 1195 Dock St after a 911 caller reported someone in distress. Tacoma firefighters initially searched the dock area and did not find anyone, so divers were sent into the channel. Witnesses at the nearby Fish Peddler restaurant reported hearing a man yelling and directed crews toward the area.
Once the man was brought to shore, responders started CPR and continued life-saving measures until he was transported to a nearby hospital at about 7:05 p.m. His condition remained unknown as of Tuesday night, according to The News Tribune.
Where it happened and local context
The Thea Foss Waterway is a narrow urban inlet where cold winter temperatures, debris in the water and active currents can complicate search and rescue operations. The City scheduled dredging work in the channel in early February, a project that can bring additional work vessels into the area and further affect visibility and maneuvering, per Tacoma Daily Index.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department also cautions that urban waterways like the Foss can turn hazardous after rainfall, with pollution and runoff prompting occasional health advisories. The agency recommends avoiding contact with the waterway when those alerts are in place, underscoring how winter conditions can add risk for anyone who ends up in the channel, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.
Officials, witnesses and what remains unknown
Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune that rescue divers recovered the man from the water and that crews performed life-saving efforts on shore before transport.
Multiple bystanders were seen recording the response with their phones, and investigators typically review any available video and interview witnesses before releasing more details. As of Wednesday night, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office and Tacoma Fire had not provided further information about the man’s identity, how he ended up in the water or his medical condition. Officials said they plan to share updates when they are available.
