A quiet Monroe morning turned tragic when a head-on collision at the entrance to a neighborhood left one driver dead and another critically injured. Both motorists were trapped in their vehicles, forcing first responders to cut them out. The crash shut down the intersection and drew multiple Monroe emergency units to the scene.

Crash at Goldmine Road and Riverchase Drive

The wreck happened around 7:20 to 7:22 a.m. today at the intersection of Goldmine Road and Riverchase Drive, near a neighborhood entrance, according to WCNC. Officers at the scene reported that both drivers were pinned inside their vehicles, and crews worked to free them before removing the victims from the roadway.

Rescue and hospital transport

Monroe Fire Department crews and Union EMS responded to help extricate the victims, and paramedics took the seriously injured driver to Atrium Health CMC Main in Charlotte, according to WSOC-TV. The other driver died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victims’ names, citing the need to notify family members first. Crews remained on site for an extended period to clear the wreckage and reopen the intersection.

Investigation under way

Monroe Police’s Traffic Division is handling the investigation, WBTV reported. The station noted that the crash happened about 45 minutes before a separate collision on Highway 74 that sent two Monroe officers to the hospital, although investigators have not connected the two incidents.

What officials say next

So far, authorities have not said whether speed, impairment or a mechanical problem may have contributed to the head-on collision. Investigators stayed at the scene to collect evidence and speak with witnesses, according to WCNC. Monroe Police have asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the department as the investigation continues.
