A Monday evening drive on U.S. Highway 30 west of Rainier turned tragic when a head-on crash left one driver dead and another seriously hurt, according to Oregon State Police. The collision, reported shortly before 7 p.m., is being investigated with impairment listed as a primary factor in what happened.
Crash Details and Victims
State troopers say an eastbound Chevrolet Tahoe crossed into the westbound lane near milepost 51 by the Lewis and Clark Bridge and slammed into a westbound Subaru Crosstrek head-on. The impact was fatal for the Subaru’s driver.
Oregon State Police identified the Subaru driver as 23-year-old Alissa Jenay Jarvis of Astoria, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tahoe’s driver, 34-year-old Lorenza Gaspar-Mateo of Longview, Washington, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, as reported by KATU.
Investigation and Traffic Impact
According to a state press release reported by local outlets, impairment and lane safety were considered primary contributors to the collision, though investigators had not yet determined whether either driver was impaired. No charges had been filed as of the latest update.
The investigation shut down the highway for about five hours while troopers and crash reconstruction teams worked the scene. Oregon State Police were assisted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia River Fire and the Oregon Department of Transportation, as reported by Columbia County Spotlight.
