A routine traffic stop on Eastlake Boulevard turned into a brief, chaotic chase when, deputies say, a 20-year-old driver suddenly took off, crashed a few blocks away, and then tried to outrun law enforcement on foot.
According to investigators, the car lost control near Emerald Park Drive, and what could have stayed a standard traffic stop quickly became a short-lived pursuit. Deputies say the driver is now facing evading and collision charges and is being held at the county detention facility.
Traffic Stop Turned Into Crash And Foot Pursuit
Deputies say they first pulled over a gray Toyota Corolla in the 13100 block of Eastlake Boulevard on Friday, according to KVIA. The vehicle initially complied and stopped, and deputies began their investigation.
Things changed quickly when, as a passenger was getting out of the car, the driver allegedly hit the gas. Officials say he sped away at a high rate of speed, lost control, and crashed near Eastlake Boulevard and Emerald Park Drive. The driver then tried to leave the wreck on foot, but deputies chased him down and took him into custody.
Charges And Booking
The sheriff's office identified the driver as 20-year-old Ian David Borders. Officials say he was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on charges that include evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and two counts of collision involving damage.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the evading charge involving a vehicle carries no bond, while each collision count carries a $5,000 bond. Those details were released along with an edited video showing portions of the traffic stop, chase, and arrest.
Sheriff's Warning To Drivers
Sheriff Oscar Ugarte used the arrest video to send a broader message, warning that “evading law enforcement only escalates a situation and puts our community at risk.” The line was included with the clip and reflects the department's ongoing traffic-enforcement push along the busy Eastlake corridor.
Officials say they released the footage to highlight the risks deputies face when a simple stop turns into a chase and to remind drivers what can happen when they try to bolt instead of complying.
What's Next
Authorities have not said whether Borders could face additional charges as the investigation moves forward, and upcoming court dates will appear in public filings. Local coverage notes that Borders was booked into the county detention facility on the charges listed above, with bond amounts set on the collision counts as reported by KVIA.
