Dog lovers in Elk Grove will have to hit pause on their adoption plans. Elk Grove Animal Shelter has temporarily stopped dog adoptions and restricted healthy-dog intakes after a respiratory virus began circulating among dogs in its care. Staff say they will still accept urgent cases while they isolate and treat affected animals.

Officials identify the illness and the timeline

Shelter representatives have identified the outbreak as a pneumovirus and say most affected dogs are showing only mild symptoms so far, according to FOX40. In rare cases, the infection can progress to pneumonia.

According to the same report, the shelter has paused all dog adoptions and healthy-dog intakes for roughly 7 to 14 days and plans to limit dog intake through February 17, 2026, while medical staff monitor and treat animals.

What the shelter will still accept

The shelter at 9150 Union Park Way will continue to accept dogs that are severely sick, severely injured, or aggressive and require immediate intervention, and owners may still reclaim lost pets. Cat and small-animal adoptions, licensing, trap-neuter-return programs, and other non-canine services will continue to operate while canine intake remains restricted, according to the City of Elk Grove Animal Services.

How shelters try to stop outbreaks

Shelter medicine experts say the fastest way to shut down transmission in a kennel is to stop adding new dogs while exposed animals clear the virus, a tactic often called a “clean break” or managed intake. The University of Florida’s Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program recommends quarantine, reduced movement, and temporary intake limits as proven steps to protect animals and staff during pneumovirus events, according to UF Shelter Medicine Program.

What pet owners should do now

Pet owners are being urged to keep an eye out for coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, or lethargy and to contact their veterinarian if any of these symptoms show up. The shelter has said it can offer medical advice and short-term support for suspected infections.

The shelter is also asking people who find lost dogs to try reuniting them with their owners before bringing them to the facility, per the City of Elk Grove Animal Services.

Shelter staff thanked the community for its patience as they work through the outbreak and called on fosters and rescue partners to help reduce kennel density while cases are cleared. For updates or to report a found pet, the shelter’s public phone line and online resources remain the main points of contact.
