A co-leader of a violent home-invasion crew that hit homes across western Washington in 2022 has admitted his role in the crime spree, pleading guilty in federal court and setting the stage for a prison sentence that could keep him locked up for decades. The crew is accused of targeting households in King, Snohomish, and Skagit counties, and one of those robberies ended with the killing of an Everett mother while her 7-year-old child slept nearby. A formal sentencing hearing is set for May 6, 2026, and the case has pulled in the FBI and multiple local sheriff's offices as investigators work to connect the dots between the break-ins.
Plea Hearing And Recommendations
Christopher Johnson, 24, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to racketeering and RICO-conspiracy charges, according to Kent Reporter. Under his agreement, he is also expected to plead guilty in Snohomish County to second-degree murder tied to the Aug. 19, 2022, killing. Prosecutors and defense attorneys will both recommend roughly 25-year prison terms that would run concurrently, federal and state, if the judge signs off. The federal counts technically expose Johnson to a possible life sentence, and the judge will make the final call at sentencing.
What The Indictment Describes
According to a U.S. Department of Justice press release, the federal indictment lays out at least seven racketeering acts between May and August 2022. Those include armed robberies in Mount Vernon, Burien, and Kent, a kidnapping linked to the Mount Vernon case, and the Everett home invasion that turned deadly. Prosecutors say the crew typically struck between about 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., wearing black, yelling "Police" as they forced their way in, and tying up victims, including children, with zip ties while accomplices tore through the homes. "These senseless acts of violence have profoundly affected our community," Snohomish County Sheriff Susanna Johnson said in the release.
Victim And Community Impact
The Aug. 19, 2022, Everett robbery left 35-year-old Irah Sok dead, her husband injured, and their 7-year-old son in a nearby bedroom, according to court filings and local reporting. The killing shook Asian communities across the region. It spurred victim-advocacy groups to push for witnesses to come forward while helping the family and other victims navigate the criminal justice system. As FOX 13 Seattle reported, detectives are still working with partner agencies to identify everyone involved in the crew.
Co-Defendants And Ongoing Probe
Federal prosecutors have also charged 29-year-old Kevin Thissel as a co-defendant, saying he shared a leadership role in the enterprise and recruited juveniles to help carry out some of the robberies. The FBI is continuing to investigate with major assistance from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, the King County Sheriff's Office, and the Kent and Mount Vernon police departments, according to court documents and the federal announcement. Investigators are still asking anyone with surveillance footage or other information about the break-ins to contact law enforcement as the case moves toward sentencing and potential additional charges.
Legal Next Steps
Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced on May 6, 2026. Under the plea deal, both prosecutors and defense lawyers plan to recommend lengthy prison terms that, if the judge agrees, would keep him behind bars for decades, Kent Reporter noted. The judge can accept or reject those recommendations and will decide whether any federal time should run concurrently with, or separately from, the anticipated state sentence.
