Charlotte woke up socked in under low clouds and patchy fog today, but this gloomy start is set to flip to full-on spring preview by midday, with highs near 67°F. Sunday cranks it up another notch toward 74°F, a quick taste of early warmth before a cooler pattern and a fast-changing setup Monday that could briefly flip the script back to wintry in the northern mountains and nearby foothills.
Morning Fog, Sunny Afternoons
Patchy fog and low clouds are expected to lift through the late morning, with skies clearing by mid-afternoon as light north winds let the sun finally take over. Forecasters expect the fog to fade before 9 a.m. today, with temperatures climbing from the upper 40s in the morning into the mid-to-upper 60s by afternoon and a low near 44°F overnight.
If you are trying to time your outdoor plans, the sweet spot is Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday, when most spots around the Charlotte area are forecast to stay dry and comfortably mild.
Wintry Risk Monday In The Mountains
A colder air mass is expected to settle in on Monday, March 2, 2026, and a stubborn pool of cold air near the mountains could be just enough to flip rain to freezing rain from Monday into Monday night across the northern mountains and adjacent foothills. Some forecast tools also hint at a low chance of brief freezing precipitation along portions of the I-40 corridor, although confidence in that more eastern ice threat is lower.
If freezing rain develops, it could turn roads slick and lead to isolated tree or power issues in higher terrain. Travelers heading into or through the mountains should be ready to adjust plans if conditions deteriorate.
Plan Your Commute
Before driving into the mountains, check the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg for county-level timing and any expected road impacts. Forecasters there are tracking increased freezing-rain probabilities for some mountain locations and will keep updating details through Sunday night.
We first covered the morning fog and the warm weekend setup in our earlier piece on the fog-choked Charlotte commute; this update zeroes in on the late-week cooling risk now starting to come into focus.
Outlook
Once that trapped cold air finally erodes, a milder pattern returns by midweek, with highs climbing back into the 60s to low 70s by Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Expect further updates if the timing or impacts of Monday's event change, especially for those mountain roadways that tend to feel the ice first.
