What started as a routine traffic stop in Lake Worth turned into a multi-agency pursuit, an hours-long armed standoff, and a fatal police shooting, now laid bare in newly released 911 calls and officer video.
Fort Worth and Lake Worth police this week made public audio and footage from the Jan. 30, 2025, encounter, in which a Fort Worth SWAT officer fired a single round that struck 35-year-old Nicholas Sides. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. No officers or other civilians were reported injured.
Police Roll Out 911 Calls And Body-Cam Clips
At last Friday's news conference, the two departments played selected dash, body, and cellphone video, along with 911 call recordings, for reporters and released the material to the public, according to CBS Texas. Chiefs from both agencies walked through a detailed timeline while investigators fielded questions about the tactics used throughout the chase and standoff. Officials said the release was meant to give the community a clearer view of officers’ actions from start to finish.
Traffic Stop Flee Turns Into Gunfire In Sansom Park
Police say the chain of events began around 4:15 p.m. on Jan. 30, when Lake Worth officers tried to pull over a pickup, and the driver took off, Police1 reported. Body-worn camera footage shows the truck crashing into a yard in the 5200 block of Buchanan Street in Sansom Park. The man then opened fire at pursuing officers before driving away toward Fort Worth, officials said. One round hit the hood of an officer’s SUV, but no one was reported hurt.
Skyline Drive Standoff Drags On For Hours
Officers followed the pickup to a home in the 1700 block of Skyline Drive, where the suspect briefly held a family member before letting her go and barricading himself inside, according to FOX 4. Negotiators and the Fort Worth Crisis Intervention Team spent hours trying to talk him out while he reportedly set off fireworks and refused commands.
Police say officers used 40mm less-lethal rounds in an effort to disarm him. When he pointed a handgun at officers and fired, a Fort Worth SWAT officer shot back once and hit him in the torso, according to the department’s account. Sides was later pronounced dead at a hospital. No officers or civilians were reported injured during the standoff, officials said.
Multiple Investigations Now Underway
The Fort Worth Police Major Case Unit, Internal Affairs and the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office have all opened reviews of the shooting, and Lake Worth police conducted a separate standard critical incident review, according to The Dallas Morning News. As required by department policy, the officers involved were placed on routine administrative leave and have since returned to duty, officials said at the briefing. The Tarrant County DA’s review will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted.
Recordings Capture Desperation And De-Escalation Attempts
The newly released material includes 911 audio in which the man tells dispatchers he would rather die than go back to prison, and it documents multiple attempts by officers to calm and de-escalate the situation, Police1 reported. Community members and civil-liberties groups are likely to follow the district attorney’s review closely as officials weigh whether any policy or training changes should follow the deadly standoff.
