A significant flooding incident occurred at Fulton County's Rice Street Jail on Saturday, resulting from a pipe repair failure during what should have been a routine water leak fix. As reported by FOX 5, the mishap started with a toilet leak in the medical unit, and when attempts to tighten a coupling failed, the floodgates opened, allowing an estimated 70,000 gallons of water to inundate parts of the facility.

By the day’s end, contractors had been called in to clear the standing water and to evaluate further remediation efforts. According to a statement given to Rough Draft Atlanta, the flooded areas included the jail's front entrance and lobby, medical clinic, officers' dining room, parts of the server room, and courtrooms. Fortunately, the sheriff's office assured that no inmate housing sections were affected by the deluge.

Adverse weather was not the culprit, with county officials confirming that the flooding was not a result of freezing conditions. While the water service to the building was temporarily interrupted, service restoration has since occurred. Meanwhile, the facility's front lobby faced closure, expected to last until at least the morning of February 1st, diverting all employee and contractor traffic to the back entrance of the jail.

"The conditions are not only unsafe and disruptive for people being held there, but also for staff who are required to work in the building," District 4 Commissioner Mo Ivory voiced in a statement obtained by FOX 5. This recent flood continues a troubling pattern for the facility, which has dealt with similar issues before, including a flood last October after which servers were repaired for a steep sum of $1 million. Directly impacted by Saturday’s flooding, the cost to fix the servers again remains unclear.

Despite the efforts made by officials following previous incidents, including a $1.1 billion renovation approval by the Fulton County Commission in August 2025, the jail seems to be plagued by water-related woes.
