Garvin County residents were told to hunker down Thursday after what authorities called a "dangerous situation" led the Sheriff's Office to order a shelter in place. Deputies urged people to stay away from East County Road 1540, East County Road 1550 and North County Road 3250 while they worked to secure the scene.
A suspect was taken into custody later that day, and the situation was declared under control.
Multiple local and state agencies rushed in to help, including the Pauls Valley Police Department, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police Department and the Maysville and Stratford police departments, according to KOCO. The outlet also reported that the Sheriff's Office eventually issued an all clear, though officials have not yet said what exactly made the situation “dangerous.”
Officials' Response
The Garvin County Sheriff's Office said the alert went out on the department's public channels while deputies stayed on scene to investigate. The office added that any new information will be shared through its usual outlets as the investigation continues.
Local Context
The shelter-in-place alert landed not long after a high-speed chase near Pauls Valley that ended in a deadly standoff and an explosive device detonation, highlighting the rare but serious incidents the county has been dealing with recently, according to reporting on the deadly standoff and explosive blast. That earlier case also brought in multiple agencies and required lengthy on-scene operations.
Anyone with tips, photos or video from Thursday’s incident is asked to contact the Garvin County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at (405) 238-9900 or reach out through the department's public channels. Residents are urged to keep an eye on local alerts and continue steering clear of the county roads mentioned earlier until officials say normal travel can safely resume.
