Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani have announced a plan to provide New York City with an additional $1.5 billion over the next two years. According to the Governor’s office, the funding is intended to help address the city’s ongoing fiscal challenges.
The funding package includes $510 million to cover expenses previously shifted to New York City by past state administrations. This includes roughly $300 million for youth programs, $150 million in restored sales tax revenue, and $60 million for public health initiatives. Governor Hochul said the investment aims to strengthen city services and support financial stability. The allocation of the remaining $500 million will be determined in future discussions to identify shared priorities.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed appreciation for the state’s support, noting that city residents should not bear the burden of the budget shortfall. He described the funding as a step toward a more collaborative relationship between the city and state governments, aimed at supporting New York City workers.
The new funding builds on Governor Hochul’s ongoing support for New York City, including proposals to expand access to universal child care. Mayor Mamdani has also taken steps to reduce the city’s budget gap, now estimated at $7 billion, through the use of in-year reserves, agency savings plans, and unexpected revenue increases. Officials describe the measures as part of a partnership between City Hall and Albany aimed at supporting working families.
