During the recent City Council Regular Session, public comments acknowledged the work of city departments. The Development Services and Building Departments were recognized, along with the city’s sponsorship of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Ceremony. More than 30 volunteers were noted for assisting 94 families, according to the City of Green Cove Springs.

During the Awards & Recognition portion of the session, February was officially proclaimed Black History Month. Individuals including Kimberly Thomas and Laquetta Willimon were recognized for their volunteer work on events such as Christmas on Walnut Street. The session also included a report from Electric Department Director Andy Yeager noting minimal service disruptions during a recent cold weather period.

The City of Green Cove Springs listed several event approvals, including a Blues Concert supporting the Kirwan Campaign and the Augusta Savage Cultural Arts Festival. The consent agenda also included the renewal of the Food Truck Friday event for 2026, authorizing necessary street closures and city support for public events.

In legal matters, the Huntley v. City case is reportedly nearing a settlement. City Attorney Jim Arnold requested an additional $5,000 for legal counsel, which was approved. The council also discussed carports and the Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC), reviewing their functions and potential future adjustments.

Vice Mayor Ed Gaw requested a review of the city’s reserve funds and the Florida DOGE report, citing concerns about potential revenue impacts from a property tax referendum.
