A violent carjacking in southwest Oklahoma City on Monday sent officers rushing to the area after police say a man assaulted a victim and stole their car at gunpoint. The incident unfolded near Southwest 20th Street and South Pennsylvania Avenue and triggered a heavy police response. The victim was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover, as reported by KOCO.
According to KOCO, police say the suspect hit the victim in the head with the butt of a firearm, then took off in the victim's vehicle. Officers soon spotted the stolen car, set up a perimeter and started searching. The suspect tried to run, but a K-9 tracked him down and officers found him hiding under a trailer. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name.
How The Arrest Unfolded
Oklahoma City officers routinely call in K-9 units when suspects bolt from crime scenes. In a similar case covered by News 9 in May 2024, a police dog tracked a carjacking suspect who had taken off after a crash, helping officers recover the stolen vehicle and arrest the man hiding in nearby brush. That case highlighted how quickly a vehicle theft can escalate into a foot chase, and why officers often surround an area and bring in K-9 teams.
Potential Charges And Penalties
In Oklahoma, stealing an automobile is a felony. When a firearm is involved or a victim is seriously hurt, prosecutors can seek enhanced counts such as armed robbery or longer prison terms, according to state jury instructions and statutes. Guidance from the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals on larceny of an automotive-driven vehicle outlines the potential penalties and sentence enhancements that may apply.
Police have not released the suspect’s identity and say the investigation is still active, KOCO reported. Officials have not said whether a weapon was recovered or which specific charges the suspect will ultimately face.
