A high-speed wreck on Harborview Road in Charlotte County on Saturday night left two people dead, including a 12-year-old girl, and critically injured another driver. Troopers say the violent collision followed an earlier, non-injury crash involving a pickup truck that reentered traffic and slammed into a Chevrolet Malibu in a curve on the road. Authorities have released only basic details about the victims: a 25-year-old man from Lake Placid and a 12-year-old passenger were killed, and a 44-year-old Port Charlotte man was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries.
Crash details
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, as reported by Gulf Coast News, the chain of events started at Kings Highway and Veterans Boulevard. Troopers say the driver of a 2003 Mazda B300 pickup was involved in a crash there that did not result in any injuries, then left that scene and continued south on Interstate 75 before taking the exit onto Harborview Road.
Once on Harborview, investigators say, the pickup was headed west at a high rate of speed when it entered a right-hand curve, crossed the centerline and plowed head-on into an eastbound 2001 Chevrolet Malibu. The pickup driver and the 12-year-old girl riding in the Malibu were pronounced dead at the scene. The Malibu’s 44-year-old driver was critically injured. Troopers say the Florida Highway Patrol is still working through the crash scene and the full sequence of events, and the case remains under active investigation.
Local context
Neighbors in the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda area did not need much convincing to believe this stretch of Harborview Road was the site of yet another serious crash. The corridor has a history of bad wrecks and traffic tie-ups, with FOX4 previously covering crashes there that triggered heavy backups and trauma alerts.
The road includes a sweeping curve near the I-75 exit that locals have long called risky, especially when drivers come off the interstate too fast. Troopers and traffic safety advocates have repeatedly pointed to speed and driver behavior as frequent ingredients in deadly crashes on roads that combine high-speed ramps with tight or deceptive curves, and Harborview has become a familiar name in those conversations.
What officials are saying
Residents and homeowners along Harborview Road have told reporters that certain sections of the corridor, including a curve some simply call dangerous, have seen cars crash again and again. That pattern has been highlighted in local coverage by Gulf Coast News, which has documented vehicles losing control and even ending up in yards and homes.
So far, officials have released only the ages and hometowns of those involved in Saturday night’s head-on collision and have not made full identities public. Troopers have not announced any charges at this stage, saying the Florida Highway Patrol is still piecing together evidence from the roadway and will share more when it is ready for release.
The deadly Harborview crash is the latest in a string of serious collisions that have rattled the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda area. For now, investigators say their work at the scene is not finished and more details will be released as they become available.
