Police are seeking the public’s help after a phone was stolen from a store employee on West 125th Street in Harlem last Wednesday, Feb. 11. Investigators said a 38-year-old woman was assisting a customer with several phones when the individual suddenly grabbed one and fled. Store staff pursued the suspect outside, but the person escaped on foot. Officers later released images of the suspect to aid in identification.
According to a Facebook post, the grab happened around 10:59 a.m. inside a store at 457 West 125th Street. The person reportedly tried to purchase multiple phones, then snatched one from the 38-year-old employee’s hand and walked out. The Crime Stoppers post includes several images that detectives hope will lead someone to recognize the suspect, and the department is asking anyone with information to call in a tip.

Why this matters
The 125th Street grab comes amid a broader pattern of phone-focused thefts and ambush-style robberies around the city. As reported by CBS News, surveillance images have helped investigators track suspects in a string of Manhattan robberies, and Hoodline recently highlighted a Washington Heights robbery spree involving a bat-wielding crew. Neighbors and small-business owners near West 125th Street are being urged to save any surveillance footage and to work with police rather than confronting suspects themselves.
Legal note
Being sought in connection with a robbery can bring felony charges under New York law. The state’s Penal Law defines robbery as “forcible stealing” and breaks it into degrees that carry potential prison time. Under New York Penal Law Article 160, penalties depend on factors such as whether a weapon was involved or anyone was seriously hurt. If an arrest is made, the case would be prosecuted by the District Attorney’s office.
Anyone who recognizes the person in the released images or who has video from around 457 West 125th Street from last Wednesday is asked to contact Crime Stoppers by phone or through the online portal. If you see someone committing a similar crime, call 911 immediately. Police are urging the public not to approach the individual and to preserve any relevant footage for investigators.
