James Avery Craftsman Inc. is about to sink serious money into its Hondo operation, filing plans for an $11 million expansion that would refresh production areas and give employees more room on the town's modest industrial strip. If the schedule holds, people in Hondo could see construction activity picking up by late June.
State filing pegs $11 million upgrade at Hondo plant
According to MySA, a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing lists the project as "James Avery MFG - Investment" and describes a 2,900-square-foot interior renovation and addition at 1101 Castro Street in Hondo. The filing outlines a construction start in early March and a completion date of June 26, 2026, although permitting and procurement can still shift those targets.
State records flag earlier work at the same site
Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation project pages also show a separate 2025 filing at 1101 Castro Street identified as Project #TABS2025023432, labeled "HMFG - Enamel Room," that recorded a 2,500-square-foot interior renovation at a much smaller estimated cost. The entry suggests a series of staged upgrades at the facility in recent years. That earlier record is available on the state site through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
James Avery's footprint in Hondo
James Avery has maintained a manufacturing presence in Hondo since about 2000, and the Hondo Economic Development Corporation reports the company wrapped roughly 9,500-square-foot upgrade in 2024 that modernized equipment and expanded employee areas. The organization also lists James Avery among Hondo's top employers, a status that means changes at the plant tend to ripple into the local workforce and downtown businesses. Local ripple effects
Economic development officials say projects like this can generate short-term construction work and help support retail and service businesses in small towns like Hondo, especially in a county that is already drawing large capital investments. Medina County has landed major projects in recent years, including Microsoft data center build-outs in the Castroville and Hondo corridor that have reshaped local utility and land use planning. Reporting on the broader data center surge around San Antonio is available from the San Antonio Express-News.
MySA reported that a company representative was not immediately available for comment on the newly filed project, and James Avery had not issued a public announcement tied to the larger $11 million figure as of Tuesday. The brand, founded in Kerrville in 1954, remains privately held and operates a mix of manufacturing and retail locations, with additional background available at JamesAvery.com.
