A Thursday evening drive on a quiet Marion County road turned deadly when two pickup trucks slammed into each other head-on, killing a 34-year-old woman from Holiday and sending both drivers to the hospital.

The crash happened around 6:50 p.m. at the intersection of NE 160th Avenue Road and NE 220th Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers said a southbound pickup crossed the double-yellow center line, heading into the path of a northbound pickup. The northbound driver swerved in an attempt to avoid the oncoming truck, but the vehicles still collided head-on.

The woman riding in the front passenger seat of the northbound pickup was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by ClickOrlando. Troopers said the driver of that truck, a 36-year-old man from Fort McCoy, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Another passenger in the same vehicle suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the southbound pickup, identified as a 29-year-old man from Citra, was also transported to a hospital with serious injuries, according to troopers.

Investigation and safety context

The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and has not yet released further information on what might have caused the southbound truck to cross the center line or whether any charges could follow.

The deadly wreck comes as Marion County continues to wrestle with a persistent number of serious and fatal crashes in recent years. Local reporting and state crash data show a steady level of deadly collisions, including a notable rise in pedestrian deaths, according to Ocala Gazette. County and state officials have been pursuing road-safety projects and federal grants in an effort to cut down on severe crashes on rural two-lane roads similar to the one where Thursday's collision occurred.

What officials are saying

Troopers told ClickOrlando that the crash unfolded after one of the pickups crossed the center line, leading to the head-on impact, and that the investigation remains active.

Authorities said more details would be released as they become available and urged anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about it to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
