Swedish furniture giant IKEA has set its sights on Tulsa, Oklahoma, marking the brand's first foray into the state. Slated to open in fall 2026, the new city store will take over the defunct Belk location at Tulsa Hills, encompassing a space of 51,000 square feet. The much-anticipated arrival not only promises an authorized pick-up venue for online sales but could also inject between $30-40 million annually into the local economy, according to the City of Tulsa's announcement.
Reflecting on the community's long-time aspiration to attract IKEA, Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols acknowledged the collective efforts that brought the project to life. "For years, Tulsans have rallied around the idea of having an IKEA in our city, and I’m proud to say this generation of leaders made it happen," Mayor Nichols expressed in a statement obtained by the City of Tulsa. District 2 City Councilor Anthony Archie emphasized the economic elevation expected for the area, "IKEA’s investment in Tulsa Hills represents jobs and economic growth for District 2. Our economic development team is the best - they are working so hard to make Tulsa the best place to live work and play!" However, details related to incentive packages to finalize the store's establishment are still a talking point for the Tulsa City Council, as mentioned on the City's website.
With anticipations running high, IKEA's upcoming Tulsa presence is poised to draw shoppers not only from within the state but also from neighboring regions like Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. This aligns with prior initiatives by local leaders and organizations to attract major retailers. In 2024, pivotal steps were taken by PartnerTulsa in collaboration with Tulsa Remote and TYPROS through the "Tulsa Loves IKEA" campaign, which included a concerted trip by nearly 60 Tulsans to an IKEA store in Frisco, Texas.
Senior Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development for PartnerTulsa, Michelle Barnett, commented on the significance of IKEA selecting Tulsa, stating, "PartnerTulsa's work toward today's announcement began almost three years ago and exemplifies our focus on community-led retail attraction.” She also highlighted the broader impact: “IKEA's announcement accelerates Tulsa momentum as a regional retail destination and demonstrates why both national and specialty retailers are choosing Tulsa." This statement encapsulates the strategic and optimistic view of local organizations regarding retail growth in the region, as per the City's official website.
