Cincinnati’s dining scene is getting a serious jolt of star power this May, when Chef Makoto Okuwa opens Suzu, a contemporary Japanese restaurant, at Madison Square. The 6,000-square-foot space is planned to seat more than 200 guests and will feature indoor and outdoor dining, a private Tea Room and a full craft cocktail bar. For diners looking for something a little more intimate, a 12-seat Edo-style omakase counter called Suzunone will offer a separate sushi experience apart from the main dining room.
According to WKRC, Suzu is scheduled to debut in May, and the Cincinnati restaurant will be Okuwa’s first in the Midwest. The station notes that the project is set to occupy a large retail footprint at Madison Square, with imagery released through Suzu/Willow PR. “Suzu is a celebration of Japanese culture and cuisine, where every detail matters,” Okuwa said in a media release cited by WKRC.
Where Suzu Will Sit
FOX19 reports that Suzu is planned for Building 400 on the Medpace campus, with city planning documents indicating both indoor and outdoor seating. That campus, branded Madison Square, is part of a multi-year redevelopment that includes office towers, the Element Eatery food hall and the Summit Hotel, as Skanska explains in a recent press release. The project has helped turn Madisonville into a growing hub for restaurants and hospitality ventures.
About Chef Makoto Okuwa
Per the chef’s official site, Makoto Okuwa trained in Nagoya before spending years working closely with Masaharu Morimoto, eventually branching out to open his own namesake restaurants. Makoto highlights locations in Miami and several international markets, with the Bal Harbour restaurant particularly known for its Edomae-style sushi. Okuwa has also appeared on televised cooking programs, including a stint on Iron Chef America.
What This Means For Cincinnati
Local outlets have positioned Suzu as part of a broader wave of restaurant openings slated for Greater Cincinnati in 2026, including several concepts linked to the Medpace expansion, according to FOX19. For Madisonville, landing a chef with national name recognition marks another step in the neighborhood’s shift away from strictly quick-serve spots and long-standing staples toward a more varied dining mix.
Opening Timeline And Reservations
Suzu is scheduled to debut in May, though an exact opening date and reservation policy have not yet been released. The station’s coverage features renderings credited to Suzu/Willow PR, and restaurant representatives have not posted menus or booking information publicly so far.
