San Diego drivers got a rare bit of good news at the pump today when word spread that at least one Kearny Mesa gas station had dropped regular unleaded below $4 a gallon. The sub-$4 price quickly drew in commuters eager for a cheaper fill-up, even though for most residents the relief is more novelty than new normal, with countywide averages still far higher.
Local TV crews identified the bargain stop as Gas King in Kearny Mesa. Speaking with CBS 8, a station representative said the lowered price was meant to "give back to the community," and that traffic noticeably picked up around midday once the new numbers hit the sign. The report did not specify how long the below-$4 price would stay on the board.
County averages still higher
That eye-catching deal does not change the bigger picture. AAA's tracker put the San Diego metro average at roughly $4.60 a gallon as of Friday, compared with a national average near $2.94. The spread illustrates how California-specific costs, including taxes and fuel requirements, keep prices here elevated compared with the rest of the country, a gap that AAA continues to highlight.
Why a few stations can dip below the average
Retail prices at individual stations can swing based on wholesale costs, neighborhood competition and seasonal fuel shifts. Analysts say the transition to cheaper winter blends, combined with more fuel imports to the West Coast, has helped push some prices down, creating room for a handful of stations to slide under the county average, according to reporting by SFGATE.
Where to look and what to expect
Drivers on the hunt for a sub-$4 tank should rely on real-time apps and local price trackers before heading out of their way, since the cheapest spots tend to appear and vanish quickly. Local outlets and GasBuddy-style roundups have previously featured lists of stations offering gas under $4 across the county, but it is worth remembering that overall averages remain high and that pump prices can move fast, as NBC 7 San Diego has reported.
