The town of Lady Lake is mourning the loss of Commissioner John Gourlie, who has served the community since 2022. According to an announcement from WFTV, Commissioner Gourlie passed away at the age of 74, just two years after he was re-elected to his post in November 2024.
During his time in office, Gourlie was known for his connection to local commerce and fiscal responsibility, serving as a liaison to the Police Pension Board and the Lady Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. He had a colorful career outside of his public service, having worked in sales, quality control, and even owning a mortgage company. His most recent employment was at RoMac in the truss plant, as reported by Villages-News.
Gourlie's history spanned multiple regions and roles. Born in Illinois, he moved to Florida before eventually relocating to Canada with his parents as a teenager, maintaining dual citizenship throughout his life. His diverse professional background included stints as a welder, plant manager, and an auctioneer, highlighting a life of varied experiences and services.
Friends and the local community knew Gourlie not just as a commissioner, but as a man who shared his love of music freely. Gourlie was often seen playing his guitar and entertaining gatherings with his karaoke performances. "He enjoyed playing the guitar and often shared his musical talent by performing karaoke at community gatherings," in a statement obtained by WFTV. He was cherished by friends and neighbors for his musical abilities and presence at local events.
