Seguin’s pipeline into construction and other skilled trades is about to get a serious boost, after local training nonprofit Skillpoint Alliance was tapped for a fresh round of Gable Grants from the Lowe’s Foundation. The award plugs Seguin into a national effort to fund short, employer-connected courses that move people from the classroom to a paycheck in a matter of weeks, as reported by Lowe's Foundation.
According to Lowe’s Foundation, the latest Gable Grants round committed more than $10 million to 15 nonprofits. Launched in 2023, the program is designed to prepare 50,000 people for skilled trades careers by 2028 while expanding hands-on training and industry-recognized credentials in fields such as carpentry, electrical, HVAC and plumbing.
Skillpoint Alliance, an Austin-based nonprofit, was named among the 15 recipients and will use its grant to expand rapid-employment courses in Austin, New Braunfels, Seguin and the Permian Basin, while also launching new efforts in San Antonio, Seguin Today reported. For Seguin residents, that means more four- and five-week classes that lead to industry-recognized certifications, hands-on experience and direct employer connections, at no cost to participants.
How the training works
Skillpoint’s rapid-employment model condenses core skills and safety instruction into four- to five-week bootcamps that are free to enrollees and paired with employer outreach and job-placement support, according to Skillpoint Alliance. Program materials show that trainees finish with OSHA-10 and other industry credentials in hand, plus help with resumes, mock interviews and employer site visits to smooth the jump into full-time work.
Why this matters locally
Local leaders have warned of shortages of skilled workers even as housing and infrastructure projects press ahead across Central Texas, and short-course models are pitched as a way to plug those gaps while opening doors to family-sustaining wages, Seguin Today noted. The Lowe’s Foundation said the grants are intended to scale programs that can be quickly adapted to local employer needs, including training in green energy and EV-charging maintenance, according to Lowe’s Foundation.
Residents and employers interested in upcoming classes or partnerships can find local schedules and enrollment information on the Skillpoint Alliance website. The new funding is expected to increase the number of short courses available across Central and West Texas communities, including Seguin.
