What started as an odd U-turn on a Madisonville back road ended in handcuffs, meth, and a stolen handgun, according to Monroe County investigators.
Detectives with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office pulled over a silver sedan on Countryside Road on Monday after seeing the driver turn around in the middle of the roadway. Officers say they searched the vehicle, then checked a small bag after the passenger agreed to let them look inside. Detectives report the bag held roughly 13.8 grams of methamphetamine, and both the driver and passenger were taken into custody at the scene.
Investigators later determined the driver was operating on a suspended license, and a registration check showed the license plate did not match the car. In separate stolen-property probes, detectives also recovered a pearl-handled .38 special that had been reported stolen, along with a cache of building materials. Those recoveries were not connected to the traffic stop, according to the sheriff's office.
What detectives say
In a Facebook update from Sheriff Tommy J. Jones II, detectives say, they first noticed the sedan as it flipped around in the middle of Countryside Road, which prompted the stop. The post states that the passenger gave officers consent to search a small bag, where detectives say they found narcotics that weighed in at about 13.8 grams.
The sheriff's summary notes that both occupants were arrested on the spot. It also says the passenger is currently on active state probation, a detail that adds another layer of scrutiny to what started as a simple traffic violation.
Local enforcement context
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has been steadily publicizing its work on drug and stolen-property cases, using its website to highlight recent enforcement activity and joint efforts with other agencies. The site includes information for the Justice Center in Madisonville and contact details for the public.
Sheriff Tommy J. Jones II leads the department and frequently posts photos and short breakdowns of investigations on social media, offering residents a running look at what his detectives are taking off local streets.
Recoveries separate from the stop
The same Facebook post from the sheriff makes a point of separating the traffic-stop arrests from other ongoing cases. According to detectives, the pearl-handled .38 special, which had been reported stolen out of Philadelphia, Tennessee, was recovered in a different investigation.
Likewise, the building materials mentioned by the department were pulled in yet another case. Detectives say those items are tied to two stolen-property investigations in the Madisonville area, and the statement does not link either the gun or the materials to the occupants of the silver sedan.
Next steps
The sheriff's office has not publicly listed formal charges or booking details for the two people arrested in the stop, and officials say the situation remains under active investigation. Detectives report they are working two stolen-property cases and will be coordinating with prosecutors as they sort through the evidence, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Anyone with information about the narcotics seizure or the stolen-property cases is asked to contact the sheriff's office through its main phone line or via the contact options available on its website.
