Michigan residents concerned about gun violence may soon benefit from new intervention programs. The Michigan State Police announced that grant applications for community gun violence initiatives will open April 1. These grants, part of the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) Phase 5 and supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, aim to reduce crime and gun violence.

MSP’s Grants and Community Services Division (GCSD) will manage the incoming applications. Col. James F. Grady II, MSP director, said, “Prior grantees have used this funding to quickly deliver real results for their communities.” He highlighted programs in Muskegon County and Benton Harbor, where past Byrne SCIP grants supported community health workers and expanded mentorship and conflict resolution programs, providing safe spaces and resources for those most affected by gun violence,  according to MSP Newsroom.

To help applicants, MSP will host a Byrne SCIP Phase 5 webinar on March 31. The session will cover eligibility, application procedures, and grant requirements. Details and registration are available on the MSP Byrne SCIP website.

For organizations looking to apply, the grant application window is open until May 13 at 12 p.m. EST. The MSP anticipates releasing grant award or denial notifications by August 3. Successful applicants will be able to start implementing their programs starting October 1, with the grant period extending through March 31, 2028. All vital information regarding the grant, including the application and supporting documents, can be found directly on the MSP Byrne SCIP website.
