A late-night run from the law turned into highway chaos early Tuesday when a reported vandalism call at a Pineville hotel escalated into a pursuit along I-485, a crash near Woodlawn Road, and three people in custody. Police say the car's driver tried a last-second escape, jumping a median and curb before the vehicle broke down and everyone bailed out on foot. Two of those arrested were juveniles that officers say already had secure-custody orders and had previously cut off their ankle monitors.
What Pineville Police Say
According to a post by the Pineville Police Department - N.C., officers were called just after 2 a.m. Tuesday to the Fairfield Inn & Suites at a Hilton property for reports of vandalized vehicles in the parking lot.
Officers say they quickly spotted a vehicle tied to the vandalism and followed it as it pulled away from the hotel, through Pineville and into Charlotte. The pursuit ended near Woodlawn Road after the driver tried to dart off the interstate by jumping a median and curb, disabling the car. In their Facebook recap, police summed it up with a pointed line: "Wrong town. Wrong shift. Wrong officers."
Gun Recovered, Three Teens Charged
As reported by WSOC-TV, three teenagers were charged after the crash, and officers recovered a gun from inside the vehicle. The station reports that the teens ran from the disabled car but did not get far before officers caught up with them after a brief foot chase.
Custody Orders and Ankle Monitors
Pineville police said two of the suspects were juveniles with active secure-custody orders who had previously cut off their ankle monitors, according to the department's Facebook post. The agency also noted that a new officer in training happened to be behind the wheel of the primary patrol vehicle in the pursuit.
Police said the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol assisted Pineville officers during the incident, helping bring the chase and foot pursuit to a quick end.
Why This Matters Locally
The arrests come as Pineville officers have been sounding the alarm about a rise in overnight car break-ins at hotels and shopping centers around the Carolina Place Mall area, a trend that local coverage has been tracking. That pattern has prompted stepped-up patrols and stronger community appeals for tips, officials told WSOC-TV.
The investigation into Tuesday's pursuit and crash remains active. Pineville police say additional or updated charges could follow as prosecutors review the case, and they are asking anyone with information to contact the department's tip line.
