An unnamed employee at the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office has submitted their resignation in the wake of a leaked information scandal involving two high-profile figures, according to the office. This leak centered on a case referral concerning Wisconsin Center District CEO Marty Brooks and Milwaukee Common Council President José Pérez, as reported by WTMJ.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Altenburg revealed that, following an internal investigation it was found that this employee improperly disclosed the names of the involved parties to an unauthorized individual, WTMJ reports. The referral was linked to accusations from Pérez against Brooks, alleging that the CEO inappropriately touched him at an event last fall, accusations Brooks has vehemently denied.
While the District Attorney's office has opted not to press charges against Brooks, the leak has raised questions about the privacy and integrity of the legal process. Altenburg has assured that their internal systems prevented further sensitive information from being accessed by the employee in question.
As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the issue came to light when José Pérez, represented by attorney Mark Thomsen, lauded the swift action of the DA's office to address the source of the leak, crucial for the "integrity of our justice system." Thomsen's statement echoes a significant worry, that violations of confidentiality could impinge upon the community's trust in their system of justice.
The circumstances leading up to the leak began when Pérez approached police alleging that he had been groped by Brooks during a fundraiser. A detailed police report was released, but Assistant District Attorney Erin Karshen concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove the required elements of the crime, as detailed by WISN. Brooks, remaining at the helm of the Wisconsin Center District, maintains his focus on his duties amidst the allegations and the ongoing situation concerning the confidentiality breach.
