Today, the airwaves of Radio America (WILC 900AM) will carry a vital conversation on Montgomery County’s Trust Act, a significant piece of legislation aimed at safeguarding the rights of immigrants in the community. Council President Natali Fani-González, a staunch advocate for the bill, and Luis Aguirre, program manager of the Latino Health Initiative, are slated to discuss the impact and implications of the Act on En Sintonía con el Concejo, as detailed in a Montgomery County press release.
The Trust Act, known formally as Expedited Bill 35-25, marks a legislative commitment to foster a more inclusive environment. Set to quickly be signed into law by County Executive Marc Elrich, the act aims to ensure all residents, irrespective of immigration status, are able to access County services without fear of discrimination. During the radio show, listeners can expect to fully understand how the legislation intends to strengthen civil rights protections, as Council President Fani-González led the charge with full Council backing. "The legislation prohibits County employees from requesting or investigating a person’s immigration status unless required by law, bans intimidation or discrimination based on actual or perceived status, and ensures that County services and opportunities cannot be denied because of immigration status, except where legally mandated," as per the County's release.
Apart from discussions on the Trust Act, Friday's radio show will also feature a crucial dialogue on the health risks associated with marijuana use, particularly among young people. Dr. Aguirre, of the Montgomery County Latino Health Initiative, will share his insights into the drug's effects on the brain, memory, and learning, and the importance of prevention. The program aligns with LHI's commitment to community health education and is set to follow up with a Facebook Live event on February 24, further advising the community on how to detect and prevent marijuana use among youth.
The Montgomery County Council's partnership with Radio America showcases a proactive approach to keep the Latino community informed on pivotal issues and available programs, providing a platform for residents to voice their concerns. The weekly one-hour show adeptly connects the public with the workings of the Council, featuring host Marcela Rodriguez and various guests each week. According to the County's press release, the partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station, offering a lifeline of information and support to the Latino community. En Sintonía con el Concejo airs every Friday at 2 p.m. and is available via streaming on platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music, ensuring wide accessibility for its audience.
